Prompt #2: April 1

How much are you worth in the Facebook network? Could you put a dollar sign on this? Why or why not?

Do you think that you could be worth more or less than some of your friends...why or why not?

How would start to measure who is the most "expensive" or "price worthy" node in the Facebook network?

From Facebook's point of view, I would assume that their revenue comes from its advertisers. Because I seldom purchase things online, I would say that I am only worth $5.00 of their multi-million (billion?) franchise. The only time that I may recall being worth any money for Facebook's advertisers was when one of the ads on the side informed me of a concert that I would not have heard of otherwise. The more "expensive" Facebook users are the ones who follow the ads more and buy things like Facebook's t-shirt, housing, and diet pill advertisements.

I dont think to facebook Im worth anything. I dont recall seeing any indication of my worth for them on the Facebook website. I didnt even know they put a worth on people. I know myspace does. and on there im worth $200. I dont like the idea that we are putting a price on people like they are ideams to be bought.

After extensive calculations, I am worth exactly $712.53. April fools! I’m too lazy to plug in the numbers to my equation…On a more serious note, I agree with Grant in saying that to Facebook Inc., I am probably not worth much, but to friends and other people in my network the information I provide them sometimes is worth more in a non-monetary sense. I definitely think I can be worth more than some of my friends, mainly because some of them are worth-less, no pun intended. In social networks, I think our worth is determined by our contributions to the overall network itself. How much information am I putting out there? How much am I contributing to conversations or debates? That’s where I feel the real worth comes in. I’d say people who are connected and have semi-strong to strong ties with lots of people are the most “price worthy” people on Facebook. Those people tend to have the most influence over their friends and therefore are more valuable to advertisers and such.

I guess I am worth some money to facebook because they put advertisements on my page. I never buy any of those gifts so Facebook doesn't make any money from me in that way. I might be worth more money than some other people that do not use facebook as much as me. The more someone is on facebook the more likely they will see the ads. I think the idea of assigning a money value to different people is a stupid idea and would probably discourage me from using facebook as much. I am not using facebook to give myself a high money value. People that the ads apply to probably are worth more money. As Grant said the only one that ever caught my attention was an ad for the T.I. concert at U of I that I would not have known about otherwise. I do not usually look at the facebook ads or spend time looking at them, but they are there and i see them even if i am not trying to look for them.

With my absolute refusal to click on any sort of online ads unless my accident I'm pretty worthless in the eyes of Facebook in that manner. However I may have some value because of my potential in advertising that I offer. The reason facebook is considered so valuable is the sheer number of people there are on it. Facebook's estimated worth is dependant on that since there is no real way to quantify the worth of facebook. Since I am part of the network I am worth something. Everyone on facebook has that same worth, but others may be more if they actually look at the advertising and click on them as facebook gets ad revenue from the number of clicks they get.

Facebook is worth $3.7 billion, and there are 175+ million users, so by that math, I'd be worth less than $21. Like Roger said, facebook gets ad revenue from the number of clicks they get. When I found this out, I decided to do my part, by clicking on ads that catch my eye every once in a while. I think that in that regard, I've earned my whole $20 worth.

In monetary terms, I don't think that any of my friends are worth more or less than me. If I knew more business people and entrepreneurs, then those people might be worth more, because they might utilize the invitation to advertize on facebook. Under other terms, like my ability to connect the global community and make the world smaller... well I'm not worth much. I have three circles of facebook friends: high school, college, and family.

I think that the most expensive people by those standards would be people who travel a lot, deal in foreign affairs, or at the very least, have studied abroad. All of these things have the potential to forge connections and friendships around the world.
